In Which Rayn delves back into cosplay
I used to run a cosplay costuming business, once upon a time. Eventually, it wore me out to the point I stopped cosplaying even for myself, because I didn't really like to do the work involved anymore. I've finally decided to take it up again, and since I decided to go to Yaoicon on short notice, I wanted something that wouldn't require tons of work. I figured, I have leather pants, a black tank top, a cute little braided golden blonde wig... gosh that sounds familiar. I thought about picking up some gloves, making the black shirt and red coat, and cosplaying that. Then, I decided to do one better. Instead of a coat and vest, I'm making automail. I have so much respect for people who do this crap all the time, because man it's a pain. XD However, nine hours, two hot glue gun burns, and twice drawing blood trying to sew through vinyl and foam, I do have a hand.(It took five glue sticks to glue all the things I had to glue to make said hand if anyone wants to know XD ) It's not painted yet, and it doesn't have the studs and screws yet, but it is a hand, and I am pleased. Once I have it painted, there will be pictures.

Anyway, ignore my mostly incoherent post. I'm rather sleepy and not thinking straight.

Hahaha, oh man, I HATED making automail. It was actually a lot more work than making my Al armor. Plus, I technically made it three times. :F

lawl, picture

ooh, that's neat looking. I hope mine turns out well. I need to get a black spandex glove to wear beneath it, but so far the hand looks pretty good for being white and covered with hot glue. XD

I have great respect for you. Due to both financial and time constraints, the "automail" I made for my Ed costume was silver duct tape over a shiny black evening glove. It looks well enough for duct tape, and certainly is in keeping with the style of automail by looking to be about the same size as my actual hand, but man... that was a pain to put together, not to mention the risk of cutting myself with an exacto knife to separate the "joints" so I could actually put it on. ^^;;;

Kudos to you for your patience and dedication to the art of cosplay and Ed-with-automail!

Mine is foam and vinyl, and a royal pain in the ass, but hopefully it'll look cool enough when it's done to be worth it. Im on major money constraints, but found a really good tutorial, and got materials for all of about $5.00, so I figure at least if it sucks it wasn't a major investment. I'm curious, how did you cut the tape without cutting the glove? I'd have messed up all over the place with that. XD

Aww thanks. We'll see if it turns out well. :D *crosses fingers*

Honestly - and this is a method I do NOT EVER recommend doing if you have anything less than superbly steady hands - what I did was put the glove on and then have my father wrap my hand and half my forearm in duct tape, each finger individually, then drew the lines of the automail joints on with black sharpie, after which I used the exacto knife to cut through the duct tape along the lines to create the joints so I could get the glove off again. If I felt the knife prick me, I was going too deep in my cutting.

Like I said, I don't recommend my method for anyone with unsteady hands or a low pain tolerance. ^^;;;

my goodness. The things we do for the sake of cosplay! XD

This isn't a good project for low pain tolerance either. I've burned myself like... four times now and I have a scap way beneath my thumb nail where a needle got driven under trying to force said needle through plastic. >:E

I saw the piccy and it's totaly awsome! I'm hoping to get into cosplay for the first time by being Riza for halloween (more like, Riza's cubby cousin XD!) and maybe going to the con in Fort Wayne next year.

Where is yaoicon at?

Thanks darlin! Ooh, I cosplayed Riza once, in just a wife beater and military pants a few sized too big, with a sign that said I'd spent the night at Roy's. XD There's a con in Fort Wayne? Here I thought the con I was trying to pull together in Indianapolis was gonna be our first true anime convention. T_T

It's in San Fran

Yeah I found out about the con in Fort Wayne a week after it happened! I *emod* for a whole day.

That Riza costume idea, awsome.

Here's the link for thw Ft. Wayne con!

Oh cool. I hope it went well for them. I think perhaps they were a little foolhardy setting it so close to Gencon, though. I hope it didn't hurt their attendance too badly. It looks like it's usually in Cincinnati and they changed it.

Hey, I am working on pulling together an anime convention in Indy. We may get a second one here, yet. :D

The Riza costume was sort of an on the fly, a friend of mine had extra uniform pants and it just seemed so funny I couldn't resist sort of thing.
